First year students at Christ Church University studying Primary Education, have began their 1 month placement at a primary school. Probably the most looked forward to and exciting part of their degree has arrived. Students have been scattered all around Canterbury for placements, while others have returned back home for their placements.

Student Sophie Nicholls, is thrilled with her placement in Sittingbourne where she has been in placement for the last 2 weeks.

“It has been an amazing experience and everyone has been so welcoming,” said Sophie Nicholls.

“At the beginning I was a bit afraid of not being able to control the children and teach them the set lessons I was told to do. But surprisingly it has been really fun and I’m learning a lot from it.”

Taking on roles with great responsibility, they help out as teacher assistants and have to plan lessons to teach the class the next day. Placement is an effective way to put students learning into practice and allowing the to have a feel of what teaching is really all about.

"It's different in the way we see them teaching maybe because they have so much more experience.

"We have been taught to teach in more practical ways where as they are more old fashioned. Its still a really good way to teach, just different to what I know," added Sophie Nicholls.

After a month of placement students will come back to University for a few weeks before finishing the year, needing to complete an evaluate assessment on their performance. Unlike the rest they do not have exams to complete before the summer.
